„… und meine tote Freundin

da draußen unter der Erde,

die Ränder der ausgestochenen

Grasnarbe wachsen schon

wieder zusammen, die Würmer

nehmen Witterung auf, und

der schlechte Geschmack,

den es hinterlassen hat,

verläßt mich und mit ihm

die einzige richtige Frau und

echte Freundin, mit der ich

es je ausgehalten habe.“

„The novel is about 2 years I lived in a faded

green hotel full of faded people. It was during

the period that I did not write a word and was

trying very hard not to commit suicide. The best

way for me to commit suicide was to remain drunk

as long as possible. Drink is a temporary suicide

wherein the user is allowed to return to life, most

of the time, that is. There were many in this hotel,

in fact the whole hotel full, who were living lives

that lasted day to day, night to night, the wine

bottle bravado, then right back into the face of

the ax with empty pockets, giant landladies and

ready alleys. I think that I made every women in

that hotel and there were four floor-fulls, and I

even went down into the cellar and got one there,

and I also cleaned the slate one night by taking

on the old white-haired scrub-woman in her tiny

closet room. It was insanity and love and the

end of the world.“

Secretly, as the clock breaks my bones

I notice the color of dresses

in sunlight given as courageously

as a work by Cesar Franck,

and across lakes of water and voices,

above mistreated shoes

as dead as rats are dead living,

I seek out an eve

that is not there.

x

Commonly known as love, most commonly

known as love,

I reach that quarter

most commonly known in fancy,

most commonly known in the

breaking of the bones,

I reach that quarter

in the color of the side of a hill

like some humped-up dog,

and some dry weeds moving

in the gifted

gelded sun.

And so you go

leaving me here

in a room with a torn shade.

x

And so you left quickly

as you arrived to me,

and we have said goodbyes before,

and as I wiped your face and lips

you opened the largest eyes I have yet to see

and said „I might have known

it would be you“ … you did see me

but not long

and an old man of white thin legs

said „I don’t want to die“

and your blood came again

and I held it in the pail of my hands,

all that was left

of the nights, and the days too,

and the old man was still alive

but we were not

we are not.

x

And you went as you arrived,

you left me quickly,

you left me many times before

when I thought it would kill

but it did not

and you returned.

x

Now I have turned off the red radio

and somebody in the next apartment slams a door.

I will not find you on the street

or will the phone ring, and yet each moment will not

let me be.

x

It is not enough that there are many deaths

and that this is not the first;

it is not enough that I may live more days,

maybe, more years.

x

It is not enough.

The phone is like a dead animal that will

not speak. It has spoken

but always the wrong voice now.

x

I have waited before and you have walked through

the door. Now you must wait for me.
